This is my story
Hi! I’m Bethany and I’m a career coach at Ama La Vida. I love helping people on their career journeys, and I’m passionate about supporting folks as they clarify their values, design a life in line with their goals, and tell their career story with confidence. Here is mine.
I have always been fascinated by people and their stories. My first professional job was writing features for a daily newspaper, where I discovered the power of asking good interview questions and crafting a clear narrative. I went on to do a Ph.D. in U.S. history, in pursuit of my dream of becoming a college professor. I loved researching, teaching, and writing a dissertation about women who ran orchards at the turn of the century. But pursuing the elusive tenure-track professor job became detrimental to every other aspect of my life. After I graduated, I started working with a coach and talking to folks who had left academia to find a path more in line with my values. That’s when I made the pivot to career coaching! I started working in a higher education setting, and have branched out to support professionals from all fields.
My Coaching Approach
My coaching approach is holistic, making space in my sessions for transformation and growth as folks identify their core values, set goals, and make career changes. In addition to pure coaching, I draw on my background in teaching and advising, iterating with a design thinking as a framework, and using self-assessment tools (values, strengths, interests, and skills).
